My own small town newspaper, The Durango Herald, offered this wonderful piece by columnist Philip Wenz on understanding the concept of natural capital. Inspired by comments from a paranoid NYTimes reader, Wenz puts forth one of the best analogies for natural capital I’ve read in awhile: he compares it to monetary capital. Specifically, he answers the NYTimes commenter’s challenge to prove that it’s possible for us to currently be consuming “1.4 earths” of natural capital. Apparently the idea of living beyond your means is lost on the far right.
